THREE INJECTIONS FOR EVERY ONEBy
DR. PRADIP BHAUMIK
Liver is the store house of energy of the body with enormous capacity to maintain its strength & stability and to keep human body active and dynamic .But the smallest organism “virus” can sometime make the “liver” inactive. “Hepatitis - B” itself is responsible for 65% of chronic liver disease. Hepatitis B is a worldwide disease affecting more than 400 million people across the world. India is in the intermediate zone where the prevalence is around 2 - 7%. In our state the prevalence of Hepatitis B is around 4 - 5%, i.e. about 1.5 lacks of people of our state are affected with this deadly virus. More over according to a study done by ICMR on the Reang population the threat is above 13% in this particular Tribe, identified by Centre as the lone primitive tribal group of Tripura state. The way the disease has been proliferating in that population it’s only a matter of time before the disease assumes prenatal (direct transmission from mother to newborn child at birth) proportions . Hepatitis - B enters into human body through blood very silently, remain dormant for longtime and becomes active thereafter to cause severe liver disease, like cirrhosis and liver cancer. These conditions are difficult to treat.
But prevention of Hepatitis - B is easy, only three doses of vaccine can prevent actul outbreak of the disease in human body all through life-practically providing lifelong immunity from this dreaded disease . Take one vaccine today and second vaccine after one month and third dose within six months of the first dose. No booster is required.
The vaccine can be given at any age from birth and as such everybody including pregnant mothers can receive the vaccine. Only seriously ill persons should receive the vaccine on recovery of the disease. Hepatitis - B patients need not receive vaccines.
World Health Organization (WHO) requested all countries of the world to include Hepatitis - B vaccination in Universal Immunization Program (UIP) but it is yet to materialize in India.
Hepatitis Foundation of Tripura (HFT) is actively devoted to the cause of preventing the disease through vaccination programme and helping people already afflicted with it. The government of of Tripura is providing all possible help and has permitted us to utilize MCH centers of all hospitals of Tripura to provide subsidized Hepatitis - B vaccination. HFT has been actively involved in this vaccination program for last six years and we have been able to vaccinate more than three lakh people so far since we had launched the programme three years ago.To provide a thrust to our immunization program we are launching an innovative program -“Hepatitis B Eradication Program” throughout the state. As per our information no such program has been carried out in India till now.
This mass Hepatitis B vaccination Program will be organized on three specific dates i.e. 29.11.2009, 03.01.2010 & 30.05.2010.
The vaccination will be carried out in all Govt. Health Institutes of Tripura upto primary health centre level. We expect that about one lakh people could be covered under this program. The individuals who will receive vaccine on 29th November 2009 should receive his second dose on 03rd January’ 2010 and third dose on 30th May, 2010.

About 400 million people in the world are chronically infected by HBV and estimated 2 billion people are exposed to the virus in their life time .About 75% of the global population of HBV infection is from the Asian countries, particularly the developing countries of Asia pacific region.HBV accounts for at least 50%of the chronic Hepatitis cases and 70 to 85 % of hepatocellular carcinoma in this region.
On entering the body after about 150 days of incubation period it can cause jaundice and acute hepatitis which becomes negative within six months in 95% cases. Some time virus remains in the body for many years silently and causes chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and liver cancer after few decades.
Prevention of Hepatitis -B:
Hepatitis -B is best prevented by vaccination. Worldwide recombinant DNA vaccine is now used which is very safe and highly effective and got almost no side effect. The vaccine can be given to the individual of any age group (at birth to old age).Even vaccination can be given during pregnancy. However, Hepatitis B vaccine should not be given -
